Summer Health Career Experiences

Northeast Oregon Area Health Education Center (NEOAHEC) places emphasis on "Growing Our Own" health professionals. As part of NEOAHEC's long term vision, we are actively involved in providing experiences to introduce our rural youth to a variety of health care professions.

MEDQUEST Health Careers Exploration Week

Each June, NEOAHEC brings together nearly thirty high school age youth to attend a five day residential experience at Eastern Oregon University called MedQuest. The program is a "hands-on" exploration of health care careers designed to introduce students who have completed 9th -12th grade to career opportunities in health care.

Shadowing is provided as an opportunity for students to watch a health professional of their choice in their daily routine. Students have witnessed childbirth, knee replacement surgery, dog and cat spaying, and stomach surgery.

Dates and Basic Information

MedQuest is held on the Eastern Oregon University campus in La Grande, OR on June 22 -26, 2009. The tuition cost for MedQuest is $320. There are limited scholarships available and we suggest students check their own community hospital and health care providers for scholarships. The camp is for students who have completed the 9th - 12th grade. The application deadline is May 01, 2009.

MED*STARS Health Careers Honors Program 2009

Each July, Oregon AHEC’s select approximately forty high school juniors and seniors to attend a summer residential program at Oregon Health and Science University (OHSU) designed to help high school students continue to explore the working world of health careers and learn how to plan for achieving the goal of a health career. The Area Health Education Centers Program sponsors the Med*Stars Health Careers Honors Program.

Students will complete Med*Stars with a better understanding of their skills and the ability to apply those skills to achieve life goals. During the program activities, students will increase their understanding of the health care provider’s world of work. Students will observe the different roles within a health care team and identify their importance within the patient care setting. Hands-on activities are utilized to help students tie all this information together to create a two- year plan for initiating their education and career goals. Fun activities are used to facilitate
