What is MedStars? MedStars is a summer residential experience at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) designed to help high school students learn how to pursue a health care career. The Area Health Education Centers Program sponsors the MedStars Health Careers Honors Experience. When is MedStars? MedStars will be held July 17-21, 2012. Students will be expected to arrive in Portland at 1:00 on Tuesday, July 17. The program concludes at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 21. Who should attend MedStars? MedStars is open to high school students who have completed their junior or senior year of high school. Students from rural communities, particularly ethnic minority students, who have demonstrated their interest in a health career by participating in other health careers programs will be accepted into the program based on their letters of recommendation and application. What does MedStars cost? The tuition for the experience is $300, which includes four nights’ lodging, meals, transportation while in the program, and program materials. There are limited scholarships available and we suggest students check their own community hospital and health care providers for scholarships. What will I do at MedStars? You will complete the experience with a better understanding of your skills and the ability to apply those skills to achieve your life goals. During camp activities, you will gain an understanding of the work world of a healthcare provider. You will also observe the variety of roles within a healthcare team and identify their importance within the patient care setting. Hands-on activities are used to facilitate your learning experiences.
