Jr. MedStars Counselor Application

Jr. MedStars Honors Experience s held at Oregon Health & Science University. Forty 9th and 10th grade high school students from around the state will be accepted for this career exploration opportunity. Jr. MedStars is an OHSU health science career development experience for early high school, which is funded by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and made possible by the generous donation of time from OHSU professionals. Selection for participation is based on a student’s interest in health science careers, letters of reference, extra-curricular activities, and academic good standing. An eligible applicant must reside in a rural or medically underserved community, or be of minority status, or otherwise be considered to be disadvantaged.

Upon their arrival at OHSU, students learn about the roles different health professionals play in the care and treatment of patients as well as the work of health research scientists.

The program provides information to students about health career development and offers both professional panels and hands-on simulation activities from the OHSU surgery department and simulation lab. Students meet with six professionals in the health field to learn more about their contributions to the healing and well being of patients, their training, and their day to day career responsibilities.

Students in the Jr. MedStars program spend two nights at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry and enjoy many activities there.

There is no cost to students who are selected. Students will be chaperoned by a select group of teachers, Area Health Education Centers’ staff, and OHSU professionals.

More information about the 2011 program will be available January, 2011.
