Wind Ensemble
The Eastern Oregon University Wind Ensemble was founded in the Fall of
2005. This select ensemble is open only to registered students who play woodwind, brass or percussion instruments. The EOU Wind Ensemble is
the lone exclusively student instrumental ensemble at EOU. Unlike the
orchestra and and community band, there are no community members, only
registered students in this group. The music faculty would like to
encourage any student with experience on flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon,
saxophone, French horn, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, or orchestral percussion to join
and participate in this exciting new ensemble.
The Wind Ensemble, which is primarily a concert band, performs all styles and genres of symphonic concert
band repertoire from traditional band standards, to movie and film
music, to chamber music, to arrangements of contemporary music. The
group will start a tradition of touring at least once a year in 2006, in
conjunction with the jazz ensemble. The ensemble repertoire is based on
the instrumentation, interests and ability levels of the student performers, which varies from term to term. The ensemble meets Tuesdays and Thursdays of fall and winter terms for one general education credit.
The EOU Wind Ensemble director, Dr. Teun Fetz, has performed and studied
with some of the finest wind and symphonic band conductors in the United
States including: The University of Oregon Wind Ensemble, directed by
Robert Ponto; The University of Michigan Symphony Band directed by H.
Robert Reynolds; The University of Illinois Wind Symphony directed by James Keene, and the United States Air force "Band of Mid-America" in
suburban St. Louis, under the direction of Colonel Steven Grimo.
Any students with experience on any wind, brass, or percussion
instrument is strongly encouraged to contact Dr. Fetz and participate in
the wind ensemble. This group is currently setting a strong foundation
of musical excellence with an emphasis on a "total musicianship" approach to learning repertoire, ensemble performance, and individual
excellence.
Wind Ensemble members are encouraged to participate in the student directed EOU Pep Band with the expectation that Pep Band members play in the Wind Ensemble as well.
