Eastern Oregon University welcomes new teaching and administrative faculty joining the College of Education, College of Business and College of Arts and Sciences between June and September 2008. Steve Clements

   Steve Clements
   Assistant Professor of Business


   EDUCATION: Ph.D. in forestry economics and management, Virginia Tech.

   HIGHLIGHTS: For the past 10 years, Clements has worked in the 
   Information Technology department at EOU as an equipment systems
   specialist.

IMMEDIATE GOALS: To organize courses and come up to speed in relevant business practices.

FIRSTHAND: Clements is a runner and has been for over 25 years. While he says running never gets easier, it’s always given him a way to challenge himself, to think and to relax.


Camille Consolvo

  Dr. Camille Consolvo
  Dean of Student Affairs

 
  EDUCATION: Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology, Florida State University.

  HIGHLIGHTS: Prior to coming to EOU, Consolvo was the assistant vice
  president for Student Affairs at Bowling Green State University. Her job
  included oversight of career services, student media, and division-wide oversight of crisis management, assessment, staff development, technology and strategic planning.

IMMEDIATE GOALS: To enhance and improve the environment for student engagement in their learning outside the classroom.

FIRSTHAND: Consolvo has gone backpacking in the Grand Canyon five times.

  James Crews
  Instructor of English/Writing


  EDUCATION: Master of fine arts in creative writing, University of Wisconsin-
  Madison.

  HIGHLIGHTS: Most recently, Crews was a transfer graduation counselor at
  Humboldt State University in Ca., where he met with incoming freshmen and transfer students, evaluated transcripts and answered any and all questions students had about graduation.

IMMEDIATE GOALS: To get students interested in writing and reading for pleasure and to further their education. Crews says his long-term goal, however, is to keep students interested in reading and writing so they can become lifelong learners.

FIRSTHAND: Crews is a poet and he has two chapbooks coming out the next year, one of which focuses on the life and work of Cuban-born artist, Felix Gonzalez-Torres. He plans to travel to Cuba next summer to further research his life and to work on another poetic project about Ernest Hemingway


Mike Dannells

  Mike Dannells
  Director of Admissions


  EDUCATION: Ph. D., University of Iowa

  HIGHLIGHTS: Dannells comes to EOU from Bowling Green State University,
  where he was a professor teaching master’s and doctoral students.


IMMEDIATE GOALS: To review recruitment practices and admissions processes.

FIRSTHAND: Dannells loves to hike, backpack and ski - both cross-country and downhill.


 

Mark Even

  Mark Even
  Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry


  EDUCATION: Ph.D. in physical chemistry, University of Michigan.

  HIGHLIGHTS: Even comes to EOU from Eureka College in Ill., where he was
  a visiting professor, teaching chemistry and physics. He is filling in for Jeff
  Woodford, assistant professor of chemistry at EOU, who is on sabbatical.

FIRSTHAND: Even’s favorite outdoor activity is sailing.


Tracy Hayes

  Tracy Hayes
  Assistant to the Dean, Enrollment Services


  EDUCATION: Bachelors of science in business administration, EOU.

  HIGHLIGHTS: Prior to coming to EOU, Hayes was the administration & fund
  development manager at the Women’s and Children’s Alliance (WCA) in
  Boise. She managed all aspects of the WCA’s development and administration activities, including the daily operations, budgeting, marketing, and fundraising efforts. 

IMMEDIATE GOALS: To assist the dean of Enrollment Services in facilitating the enhancement of communication and collaboration between all departments with his division.

FIRSTHAND: Hayes' true passion is singing and she is also learning to play the guitar.


Michael Heather

   Michael Heather
   Assistant Professor of Theatre


   EDUCATION: Master of fine arts in theatre design, Mason Gross School of
   the Arts, Rutgers University.

   IMMEDIATE GOALS: To establish good classes in design and tech for
   students; to successfully mentor students in their design and tech projects; to create exciting designs for the theatre department’s productions to inspire student participation and work; and to work on a better organization scheme for theatre storage and shop spaces.

FIRSTHAND: Heather’s favorite quote is, “Back in the old days we had to use rocks!” He is also a member of the Historical Miniatures Gaming Society.


Jackie Hovey

  Jackie Hovey
  Instructor of Mathematics


  EDUCATION: Juris doctorate, University of Idaho, master’s in teacher
  education, EOU.

  HIGHLIGHTS: Most recently, Hovey worked in the legal and real estate-
  related fields. She also taught developmental and lower-division math classes as an adjunct instructor and served as a freshman academic advisor, at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wa. from 2002 to 2005.

IMMEDIATE GOALS: To help her students understand math so that they can succeed with their own goals and ultimately graduate.


Tawyna Lubbes

 Tawnya Lubbes
  Assistant Professor of Education


  EDUCATION: Master’s in teacher education, EOU.

  HIGHLIGHTS: Prior to coming to EOU, Lubbes taught secondary English as a
  second language and Spanish in Payette, Idaho.

RESEARCH: Her research centers on using students’ native language as a bridge toward second language acquisition and the preparation of teachers to work with second language learners within the general education classroom.

FIRSTHAND: Lubbes was a Rotary foreign exchange student in Mexico during her junior year of high school and she also spent one year in Cholula, Puebla Mexico during her college studies at Pacific University.


Peter Maille

   Peter Maille
   Assistant Professor of Economics


  
EDUCATION: Ph.D. in natural resource economics, West Virginia  
   University.

   HIGHLIGHTS: Most recently, Maille was a graduate research assistant  
   and prior to that, he and his wife owned and operated a bed and  
breakfast in West Virginia for seven years.

IMMEDIATE GOALS: To teach students well and publish from his dissertation.

FIRSTHAND: Maille caught malaria once, was stuck in a snowstorm in Kazakhstan and he can speak Wolof, but says he still can’t figure out his kids.


Heather Mercer

  Heather Mercer
  Instructor of English/Writing


  EDUCATION: Master of fine arts in creative writing, West Virginia University.

  HIGHLIGHTS: Mercer comes to EOU from WVU, where she was a graduate  
  teaching assistant and visiting instructor.

IMMEDIATE GOAL: To gain more teaching experience with a new demographic, and broaden her horizons in terms of course experience.

FIRSTHAND: Mercer drove with her dad and her cat, Geoffrey, all the way from Ohio to be here. She is looking forward to the small town life of La Grande, and hoping to take advantage of the outdoor opportunities that abound.


Christy Oliveri

  Christy Oliveri
  CORE 101 Coordinator


  EDUCATION: M.Ed. in higher education, University of Maine.

  HIGHLIGHTS: Oliveri is the new coordinator for the Integrated Studies
  Seminar in the Learning Center. Her most recent position prior to coming to
EOU was posing as a poor graduate student at University of Maine! Before graduate school she was employed by Home Counselors, Inc., as a social worker/case manager.

IMMEDIATE GOALS: To get to know her students and help them get through their first quarter, (and first year), successfully.

FIRSTHAND: Oliveri spent one summer driving antique tour buses, or “jammer buses,” in Glacier National Park. It ended up being the worst wildfire season in the history of the park and everyone was evacuated.


Sharon Porter

   Sharon Porter
   Assistant Professor of Education


   EDUCATION: Master of arts in education, Northern Kentucky University,
   master of library science, Southern Connecticut State University.

   HIGHLIGHTS: Porter worked as a librarian for the La Grande School District 
   for 17 years and more recently she was an electronic research specialist for EOU’s Pierce Library.

IMMEDIATE GOALS: To bring an amalgam of real-world, current practices that are research-based to future educators in the areas of curriculum, teaching strategies, measurement and assessment, music education, school librarianship and educational technology.

FIRSTHAND: Porter plays bass and sings with various bands in the area. She enjoys traveling and loves indie films, knitting and weaving, and being “mom” to her chiweenie, Dewey.


Patty Sandoz

  Patty Sandoz
  Instructor of Mathematics


  EDUCATION: Master’s in education, Oregon State University.

  HIGHLIGHTS: Sandoz has taught mathematics for the La Grande School
  District at the middle school and high school level and was also a math
  instructor at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton.

FIRSTHAND: Sandoz is also a teacher and practitioner of the art of calligraphy.
