In April 2005, Eastern Oregon University entered into an exchange agreement with the University of Lodz in Poland. This agreement provides unique opportunities for students and faculty to participate in scientific and educational exchanges, enriching their understanding of economic and social issues and the traditions of different cultures.
The University of Lodz was founded in 1945 and offers 16 different fields of study, the newest being inter-faculty mathematics and nature studies. The Polish university is partnered with 91 higher education institutions in 25 countries across the globe. The agreement with the University of Lodz allows students from either institution to participate in exchanges. Eligible EOU students must have completed their sophomore year of study in order to transfer to the University of Lodz.
Students from EOU will be considered full-time undergraduate students while in Poland and will need to register for a full course load for one or two semesters. Upon successful completion of their courses, students will receive a certificate and return to EOU to continue study for their baccalaureate degrees.
Sophomores and juniors from the University of Lodz may transfer to EOU as exchange students for three quarters of study. Students will receive a certificate from EOU upon successful completion of the program. After completing their undergraduate degrees in Poland, students may re-apply for another year of study at EOU to complete their master's degree. Graduate students from each university may also participate in a one-year exchange.
The city of Lodz was once referred to as the "promised land" by the Nobel Prize winning Polish author, Wladyslaw Stanislaw Reymont. A unique blending of cultures and religions met in the small town during the early 1800s as a surge of immigrants from Switzerland, Bavaria, the British Isles and other European countries came to know Lodz as home. Although no longer a cultural melting pot, the diversity that once thrived in Lodz can still be seen in the impressive churches, mosques, temples, factories and palaces that grace the city landscape. Piotrkowska Street spans 15-blocks in the heart of the city and boasts some of the finest shopping, sidewalk cafes, and historic buildings in the area.
