In January 2005, Eastern Oregon University signed an exchange agreement with the International Academy of Business at the Almaty School of Management in Kazakhstan. This agreement provides an opportunity for graduate students to enhance their communication, leadership and decision-making abilities, while developing an understanding of the economic, social and political environments of business operations.
The International Academy of Business offers the only International Executive MBA (IEMBA) program in Kazakhstan as a result of the collaborative partnership with EOU. Established in 1988, the Almaty School of Management launched the International Academy of Business to provide training for students interested in managerial positions. In April 2005, the academy became the first business education institution in Kazakhstan to successfully achieve accreditation.
Requirements for admission to the program include the completion of a baccalaureate degree, a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.80 on a 4.0 scale or equivalent, proficiency in English, and substantial business experience. Accepted students will complete a total of 36-48 credit hours of basic business courses in addition to the core and complementary courses offered over a two-year period. The IEMBA curriculum includes an outside module where students travel to the U.S. and attend seminars conducted by EOU faculty and corporate executives. A maximum of 30 students may be accepted into the program at one time.
The city of Almaty was founded by Russians in 1854 and is the former capital of the Central Asian Republic of Kazakhstan. The town lies nestled at an elevation of 2,300-3,000 feet at the base of the Tien Shan mountain range, providing a beautiful backdrop for outdoor enthusiasts to explore. The agriculturally rich region is most famous for its apple crops.
