INTRAMURAL 4-ON-4 SAND VOLLEYBALL RULES

  • A team consists of 4 players.  Out of these four players at least 2 have to be female.  Men cannot out number women by more than 1 individual.  Men and women must alternate positions.
  • All matches will consist of the best two out of three games.
  • The games will be played to 15 points. If a third game is necessary, it will be played to 15 points.
  • The games shall be played by rally scoring and the winning team must have a two point advantage.
  • Game time limit is 45 minutes-if the best of three series is not completed by the 45 minutes- if 2 games have been completed, team with the most points in the 3rd game is declared the winner. If only one game has been completed, the team with one win is declared the winner.
  • A coin toss at the beginning of the match will determine the choice of court or service.  The team which does not serve first in game one will serve first in game two.  Teams must switch sides between the first two games.  A coin toss will be conducted for the serve if there is a third game.
  • Two time outs will be given to each team.
  • Each team is allowed a maximum of three successive contacts of the ball in order to return the ball to the opponent's area.  The only exception is that a block is not considered to be one of the three contacts.
  • An illegal hit occurs when the ball comes to rest or has prolonged contact with a player.  This is a judgment call.  Each team may have a replay per match when disagreements about calls are made.
  • A double hit occurs when a player illegally contacts the ball twice in succession or the ball rebounds from one part of the body to another on a single attempt to play the ball.
  • A ball contacting and crossing the net shall remain in play provided contact is entirely within the playing area.  A served ball touching the net is also considered a legal hit (new college rule).
  • It is illegal for a player to touch the net.  Please do not hang on it, grab or pull on it.
  • No blocking the serve.
  • A replay will be conducted if a ball from an adjacent court enters the playing area.
