Health Network for Rural Schools - Team Meeting Minutes

Sept 17, 2003

1. Kathy Howley was introduced. Welcome, Kathy! Kathy S and Diane Mc are also back ... yeah! Kathy and Diane’s role was briefly described.

2. Lasa Baxter provided the annual Medicaid Admin training.

3. Everyone: Our first Medicaid Admin time study date has been scheduled for

October 14th.

4. Nancy explained reasons why Cove does not have a counselor this year.

Michelle shared an email that she had received from Cove superintendent regarding the need for mental health services. Nancy will contact the superintendent tomorrow.

5. Up until now, the data entered into the service logs has allowed us to track utilization of HNRS services. Nancy said that she’d like to see us also track some outcomes. It was decided to track our impact on dental health, obesity, and health insurance coverage. Thus, the following new information will need to be entered into the service logs this year: number of children receiving dental screening, number of children included in each of the 4 categories of dental screen (1-4), BMI’s on all elementary age students, health insurance status of students. Michelle and Selina will be responsible for dental screening results and BMI’s. Kathy S and Diane will be responsible for health insurance status. Nancy and Lee will be responsible for making changes to service log to accommodate this new data.  Patrice and Kathy H, if you decide to track anything, please let me know.

6. Discussion was held on getting input from teachers on health education/health promotion activities they might want us to offer. Selina will develop a list of health education ideas that can be distributed to teachers in their break room so that they can provide us with written input. Once the list is developed, Michelle and Selina will get these to the teachers. (Michelle & Selina, can this be done fairly quickly so that you’ll know what the teachers want in time for our next HNRS team meeting? Thanks!)

7. Discussion was held regarding using an existing group in each school district as the HNRS advisory committee. In Cove, Elgin, and (probably) Imbler, this will be the site council. In Union, this will be the Wellness Committee. North Powder’s group has not yet been identified. The following people will find out what date, time, and place these meetings are held (ie, second Tues from 4-6pm in the home ec room) and will provide this info to Nancy by the end of next week:

Vicki - Cove

Patrice - Elgin

Selina - Imbler

Sue – Union

Nancy will continue to follow-up with Kerri Smith re: an appropriate group in North Powder.

8. Discussion was also held regarding having HNRS team make an appearance at school board meetings to let these boards know what services we’re providing in the schools. Nancy will contact superintendents to schedule these meetings and will invite Other Staff to join her. Patrice said that she was planning to go to the next Elgin school board meeting – if anyone else wishes to attend school board meetings periodically to share what you are doing, this is fine and, in fact, encouraged. I think that the more we keep the schools & communities informed about what we are doing, the more support we’re likely to have.

9. Dates for the upcoming HNRS team meetings are as follows:

Tues, Oct 14, 8-10am

Mon, Nov 17, 2-4pm

Tues, Dec 9, 8-12 (this is our retreat & potluck)

Thanks you, everyone, for your participation in today’s meeting. And, again, welcome back!
