Professor Wells will give a talk for the Blue Mountain Community Forum entitled, "Traditional Medicine and Religion in Modern China." The talk will be held at 7:00pm in the Community Room of Cook Library, La Grande.

Professor W. Gregory Monahan will attend a meeting of the "Society for the Study of French History" at St. Andrews University in St. Andrews, Scotland, U.K. Dr. Monahan's paper will discuss the lack of allied (especially British) support for the Camisards entitled, "Our Poor Allies: The Camisards and His Grace, the Duke of Marlborough."

Professor Wells has received a Faculty Scholars Award for Summer 2007. Dr. Wells will do research in Hangzhou, PRC, during the month of July for his book manuscript on early Chinese autobiography. The topic of the research will be a comparison between literary immortality and Daoist notions of immortality and religious transcendence.

Several graduating seniors will continue their studies at graduate school in the Fall. Steffanie Long will attend Willamette University and Kevin Alverson will attend Boise State. Both plan to pursue degrees in education. The faculty and staff of DSSML and the History Department would like to wish Steffanie and Kevin continued success in the future!

Professor Wells will give a lecture on traditional Chinese medicine for a symposium entitled, Rich History of the Chinese in Eastern Oregon, an event sponsored by the University of Washington East Asia Resource Center, the Freeman Foundation, Eastern Oregon University College of Arts and Sciences, and the Geiser Grand Hotel in Baker City, Oregon. This and other lectures will take place at the Geiser Grand Hotel, which is hosting the event.

EOU History student Michael Cargill has been admitted to the University of British Columbia History Department for graduate school. The faculty and staff of DSSML and History would like to congratulate Mike on this accomplishment and wish him luck in his graduate career.

Beginning March 9th, Professor Wells will be an instructor for the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia, a symposium sponsered by the University of Washington East Asia Resource Center and Eastern Oregon University College of Arts and Sciences. The symposium is supported by a generous grant from the Freeman Foundation and is designed to help primary and secondary educators infuse their curriculum with material related to East Asia. Professor Wells has been invited to give a paper for the 2007 Ron Robel Lecture Series at the University of Alabama for a symposium entitled: "(Mis)interpretations East/West: Representations of China, Japan, and the West". The event is sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of History at the University of Alabama.

Professor Wells will give a talk for the EOU Colloquium Series on Thursday, January 11, 2007. The talk is scheduled in Ackerman 210 from 4-5 but will be proceeded by a reception at 3:30. Students interested in receiving academic credit for attending the colloquia series (a total of five talks) should contact Dr. Jeff Johnson (jjohnson@eou.edu) about enrolling for "SCI 407: ART-SCI Colloquia" (CRN 62557).

James Hatch will graduate from the EOU History Department this Fall and begin graduate school at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas this coming January for American History. The faculty and students of the History Department would like to wish James continued success in his academic pursuits.

Steffany Long will give a presentation entitled "My Week in New York City as a Gilder Lehrman Scholar" on Thursday, Nov. 2 at 3pm in Badgley 144. Steffany spent a week at Columbia University studying with preeminent U.S. historians. Her talk will cover her experiences as a student from a small rural university working alongside students from Ivy League institutions, as well as ways that EOU students can pursue such opportunities and how EOU faculty can facilitate them.

Dr. Rebecca Hartman will moderate a panel of pioneer descendants at the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center's Ancestor's Day celebration. After the panel, attendees will have the opportunity to speak informally to the panelists. The History Club will also work a table at the event.

Dr. Matthew Wells, a recent graduate of the University of Oregon's Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, will join the history faculty this Fall as professor of world history. Dr. Wells specializes in pre-modern China and will teach courses on world history, China, and East Asia.

Dr. Rebecca Hartman was selected as a faculty fellow for the National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for College and University Teachers held during June, 2006 at Ferrum College, in Ferrum, VA. The month-long institute, "Regional Study and the Liberal Arts: An Appalachian Exemplar," explored the ways in which regional studies can be integrated into the liberal arts. Dr. Hartman believes her experience at the institute will provide a useful model for infusing her courses at Easterm with information related to the economic, cultural, and political issues that face rural Oregon.
