| Why study History at Eastern Oregon University? |
At Eastern you will not be an anonymous face in a huge lecture taught by a graduate student. Our small class sizes allow us to work closely with our students to improve writing mechanics, develop critical thinking skills, and become informed readers. Lower division courses are often limited to 35 students, while upper division courses frequently enroll between 10-15 students. All of our classes in the History Department at Eastern Oregon University are taught by faculty who are subject matter experts and active scholars in their fields. We balance teaching and research to give students access to the latest ideas in the field of history while continuing to emphasize quality teaching in a small classroom setting. In addition, the EOU History Department offers a robust online curriculum that compliments our campus offerings. This means that even in a small, intimate department like ours, students can take courses on subjects ranging from the Vikings to Renaissance Europe to Modern China. Many of our students go on to graduate school, law school, or become teachers at the primary or secondary level. This is because the history major stresses the continuity of culture by providing a historical background for the study of other disciplines and the tools necessary for responsible citizenship. It also helps to prepare students for careers in teaching, public service, consulting, research, museums, archives, and libraries, and provides a liberal education as a basis for entering a variety of careers such as public administration, business, and law. |
