Healthy Campus Challenge 2009
The mission of the Healthy Campus Challenge is to promote physical health and emotional wellness in our campus community. Emotional wellness and physical wellness are interconnected! Exercise is one of the best ways to ward off stress, depression and illness. It also improves sleep, memory, focus, and concentration- all of which help you succeed! The healthy campus challenge is designed to make you feel good about yourself from the inside out!
The Challenge:
Students, faculty and staff will set two goals from the following areas-one must be a nutrition/exercise goal and the other can be from any area- these are just examples, think about what you need to be healthier!
Academics- time management, organization-use the challenge to get organized and stress less.
Social life-healthy social connections. If you feel you are lacking these try joining a campus club or group.Ex; intramural sports, music/theatre programs, campus ministries, social change groups, campus newspaper, student government.
Family-keep in touch with your family but realize they are learning to handle things on their own also!
Personal life-make time for yourself, do things you enjoy doing with out expectations or pressure from others. Set a goal of giving yourself 1 hour a week to do whatever you want.
Manage emotions- understand signs of stress; irritability, forgetfulness , lack of motivation, procrastination, tiredness, racing heart, sweaty palms, losing things, lack of concentration and know what you can do to manage stress! Try to keep a journal, massage, reading a book, exercise, take a break if you need one, etc.
Exercise/Nutrition- If you feel like you need to improve these areas try one of the following- exercise 30min a day most days of the week, limit high fat foods, take a multivitamin.
Sleep- do you get 8 hours every night? If not, make this a priority goal!
Participants will evaluate themselves weekly and report their results at the check/weigh-in’s on Mondays and Tuesdays at the Student Health center!
There will be “brown bag” lunch sessions every Wednesday in HUB 201 from 12:15-12:45, bring your lunch and learn! Topics include time management, emotional eating, healthy eating on the go and many more.
Participants are encouraged to participate as a team because likelihood of success increases with support!
Before engaging in a physical activity or weight loss program consult with your physician. The Healthy Campus Challenge is designed to encourage individual participants to take responsibility for their own health. The members of the Wellness committee will not provide individual counseling.
