Self-assessment for possible influenza

- Do you have a measured fever of 100.4ºF or higher? Have you had night sweats and/or shaking chills?
YES - continue to #2.
NO to both questions - go to #7.
- Do you have runny nose, congestion, cough, or a sore throat?
YES - continue to #3.
No to all symptoms - go to #7.
- Did the illness start abruptly? Were you feeling well and became ill in a few hours?
YES - continue to #4.
NO - go to #7.
- Do you have any chronic medical conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, heart or lung disease, immunosuppressive condition, or pregnancy)?
YES - continue to #6.
NO - go to #5.
- Do you have a rash, neck pain, painful urination, trouble breathing, abdominal pain, severe or persistent vomiting, chest pain, sudden dizziness, or confusion?
YES - call the Student Health Center (962-3524) if during business hours or go to the Grande
Ronde Hospital Emergency Department if after hours.
NO - go to #8
- You should be evaluated. Call the Student Health Center (962-3524) if during business hours or if necessary, go to the Grande Ronde Hospital Emergency Department if after hours and you feel very ill.
- The illness you have may be influenza or another respiratory virus. It is important to stay hydrated, rest, use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for reducing fever or aches, and to follow-up if not improving or feeling worse. The main symptoms of flu may last 3-5 days.
- There is a high likelihood that you have influenza. It is important to stay hydrated, rest, and use acetaminophen or ibuprofen for reducing fever or aches. You should continue to monitor yourself. Avoid public places for at least 24 hours until you have no fever without taking fever-reducing medications. The main symptoms of flu may last 3-5 days. If your symptoms worsen or if you feel that you need to be evaluated, call the Student Health Center (962-3524).
