TRAVEL INFORMATION

Air Transportation

Participants planning to fly to Oregon can fly into the small airport at Pendleton, which is about an hour by car from La Grande, or into the larger airport in Boise, ID, which is three hours by car (and one time change) from La Grande. The Portland airport is also an option, at about four and a half hours from La Grande by car through the beautiful Columbia Gorge. At any airport, we recommend renting a car.

Driving Directions

Take I-84 from the West (from Pendleton and Portland airports):

Take Exit 259; proceed on US Highway 30 into La Grande.

Turn right at the second set of lights - onto Fourth Street.

Continue on Fourth Street until you reach the "K" Avenue, next to the La Grande Middle School.

Turn left on "K" Avenue and continue East until you reach University Boulevard and the main entrance to the EOU campus at 6th Street.

Take I-84 from the East (from the Boise airport):

Take Exit 265, the first La Grande exit.

Turn left onto US Highway 30. Turn left on Gekeler Lane, next to the UPS terminal. Continue on Gekeler Lane until you reach 6th Street.

Turn right onto 6th Street and continue until you find parking lots beginning at “F” Avenue or until you reach University Boulevard and the main entrance to the EOU campus.

Parking

During the conference dates, campus parking restrictions will not be enforced, except for reserved spaces. There are parking lots along 6th Street between “L” and “F” Avenues. The lot closest to conference events is at 6th and “I,” but on Friday by 9 AM, it may be full. There is also parking around Dorion Dormitory at 6th and “H,” and the “free parking” lot at “G” usually has spots. If you need to use street parking, avoid the 2-hour restrictions between 4th and 6th Streets by parking on “I” and “J” Avenues between 3rd and 4th.

Registration Desk

Please check in at the registration desk in the Hoke Main Lounge on the second floor of the Hoke Union Building (HUB) east of the parking lot at 6th and "I." Hours are Oct. 5 8:00 AM - 5:30 PM and Oct. 6 7:30 AM - 5:30 PM.

Lodging

Please see the list of accommodations at: http://www.visitlagrande.com/lodging.html

Recommended lodgings are those near the 82/I-84 interchange, particularly the Best Western Rama Inn and the Super 8. A block of rooms is available at the Best Western for $85-88 per night (pool, wireless, continental breakfast), and the Super 8 (pool, wireless) has quoted a flat rate of $60 per night for conference participants. To reserve conference rooms at these locations, please mention the Oregon Rhetoric Conference. For the Best Western, please indicate you need to change the reservation from the university to your credit card.

Of course, the Stange Manor bed and breakfast is wonderful.

Another recommended place to stay is the Ascension School Camp and Conference Center, located in scenic Cove, about a half hour's drive from La Grande. Rooms there are $55 per night, and the number for reservations is 541-568-4514.
