

PES 199: Selected Topics – MedQuest Health Careers Exploration Camp
(For high school and newly graduated high school students)
June 23-27, 2008

MedQuest offers opportunities for students to explore a variety of health careers and health care technology, and identify personal strengths and weaknesses. Job shadowing opportunities, lectures, health professional sessions, tours of healthcare facilities, and hands-on presentations help the students to explore health careers, interests and abilities, and personal career goals, and understand the requirements of HIPAA and universal precautions.
The course will use a variety of activities to highlight and discuss health careers.
Class Format: Activities and discussions during a five-day camp at Eastern Oregon University.
Credit Hours: 2
Text Materials: MedQuest Notebook
Course Requirements:
a. Attend and participate in all MedQuest activities = 200 points
b. Maintain a journal during the week of MedQuest = 100 points
c. Final Project (Report describing a specific health career pathway and a written plan to achieve a potential health career goal) = 200 points
Grading: A = 500–450 points; B = 449–400 points; C = 399-350 points; D = 349-300 points; F = 299 points or below.

a. Course Intent:
Ask the students to explore a variety of health careers and health care technologies, and identify personal strengths and weaknesses.
b. Course Objectives:
a. Apply an understanding of the variety of health professions through journal writing.
b. Describe personal career ambitions within class discussions, and written report.
c. Examine various health careers through activities, lectures, job shadows and tours.
c. Course Outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
a. Identify and appreciate interests, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and other characteristics that are unique to the student.
b. Demonstrate an understanding of how interests, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and other attributes relate to achieving personal, social, education, and career goals.
c. Formulate educational plans directed toward achieving a career goal.
d. Demonstrate knowledge of and an appreciation for the variety of health careers.
e. Discuss the requirement of health careers related to interests and abilities and to high school and postsecondary education and training programs.
f. Relate the choice of high school and postsecondary courses to a career and educational plan.
