Criteria for Becoming a Social Studies Teacher:

In order to teach Social Studies at the middle and high school levels, the preparation must be equivalent to a major (at least 50 quarter credits/ 33 semester credits) in social studies related disciplines, with a majority of the coursework in history.

Preparation should include courses in a combination of the following areas:

  • U.S. history (full sequence recommended)
  • World history (full sequence recommended)
  • Geography - cultural and physical
  • Political science- especially American government
  • Economics- especially micro- and macroeconomics

Steps to MTE admission for becoming a Social Studies Teacher:

 

Step 1: Complete MTE Secondary application. Application available at:

Step 2: Send in application, including all unofficial transcripts. Send to:

Step 3: Enroll for and pass the Praxis II, Social Studies Test

Step 4: Enroll for and pass the CBEST or Praxis I (PPST)

Step 5: Complete 30 hour experience in a public school instructional setting

Step 6: Complete EOU Application for Graduate Admission. Application available at:
