Criteria for Becoming an English Teacher:       

                                                    

In order to teach English language arts at the middle and high school levels, the teacher candidate must have the equivalent of a major in English.

Preparation should include a balance between literature and writing with courses in the following areas:

  • British Literature, including Shakespeare
  • American Literature
  • World or Multicultural Literature
  • Writing at both the lower and upper division
  • Theory course: discourse linguistics or writing theory
  • Linguistics (recommended)
  • Oral communication (recommended)

Steps to MTE admission for becoming an English Teacher:

 

Step 1: Complete MTE Secondary application. Application available at:

Step 2: Send in application, including all unofficial transcripts. Send to:

Step 3: Enroll for and pass the PRAXIS II, Language Arts Test

Step 4: Enroll for and pass the CBEST or PRAXIS I (PPST)

Step 5: Complete a 30 hour experience in a public school instructional setting

Step 6: Complete EOU Application for Graduate Admission. Application available at:
