Criteria for Becoming a Science Teacher:

In order to teach introductory Science at the middle and high school levels, the preparation must be equivalent to a major (at least 50 quarter credits/ 33 semester credits) in science related disciplines, with a majority of the coursework in integrated science.

Preparation should include a combination of the following areas:

  • Full sequence of Geology with lab (200-level minimum)
  • Chemistry with lab (2 terms recommended)
  • Physics with lab (2 terms recommended)
  • Biology with lab (2 terms recommended)
  • Additional classes in astronomy, meteorology, geology, and/or oceanography

*Some of these courses must be upper-level

Step 1: Complete MTE Secondary application. Application available at:

Step 2: Send in application, including all unofficial transcripts. Send to:

Step 3: Enroll for and pass the Praxis II, Integrated Science Test

Step 4: Enroll for and pass the CBEST or Praxis I (PPST)

Step 5: Complete 30 hour experience in a public school instructional setting
