Criteria for Becoming a Chemistry Teacher:

In order to teach Chemistry at the middle and high school levels, the preparation must be equivalent to a major (at least 50 quarter credits/ 33 semester credits) in science related disciplines, with a majority of the coursework in Chemistry.

Preparation should include courses in a combination of the following areas:

  • Full sequence of Physical Chemistry with lab (200-level minimum)
  • Full sequence of Organic Chemistry with lab (200-level minimum)
  • Biology or Physics with lab (full sequence recommended)
  • Biochemistry
  • Chemical Safety

Steps to MAT admission for becoming a Chemistry Teacher:

 

Step 1: Complete MAT Secondary application.

Step 2: Send in application, including all unofficial transcripts. Send to:

Step 3: Enroll for and pass the EAS or CBEST or Praxis I (PPST), and content area test

Step 4: Complete 30 hour experience in a public school instructional setting

Step 5: Complete EOU Application for Graduate Admission. Application available at:
