PrISM (Preparation for Instruction of Science and Math) is a new program that provides accessible professional development and support for elementary and mid level math and science educators that may lead to a certificate of completion.
PrISM is a collaborative effort of seven Oregon universities—Eastern Oregon University, George Fox University, Lewis and Clark College, Oregon State University, Portland State University, University of Portland, and Western Oregon University--to offer graduate level courses and professional development in math and science that will be available online, in weekend workshops, or at summer institutes or combinations of these formats. PrISM courses may be used toward a PrISM certificate of completion, or can be applied to a cognate area of the Master’s of Science in Education degree.
The goal of the PrISM is to improve the math and science abilities of students in Oregon's schools and to help teachers
Work with students to design investigations responsive to different science domains/contexts (e.g., earth & space, physical, life).
Encourage students to engage in mathematical thinking and problem solving (conjecturing, justifying, generalizing) using numbers and algebra, measurement/ geometry, data analysis, and probability.
Integrate math and science learning in their curriculum.
Increase their confidence in teaching science and math.
Teach with enhanced math/science content knowledge and knowledge of students’ psychology of learning as they address the K-8 standards in math and science.
