Tao, Zen and Baseball - Eastern Influence on Management Thought (5) A cultural and managerial study of selected Chinese, Japanese, and other Asian philosophies and their applicability in the Western business environment. The course will look at leadership from the perspective of Lao Tzu; strategy from the perspective of a Japanese samurai; group processes seen by Americans playing baseball in Japan; and a short emersion in Japanese culture. We will seek to understand some aspects of the strengths of Asian business that have developed from their cultural values.
Note: Note: This course is a Leadership, Organization, and Management option elective or an International Business option elective in the Business Administration Degree Program. Fire Inspection and Investigation (3) This course focuses upon management theory and practices of the fire prevention, fire inspection, code enforcement, arson investigation, and public education functions of a comprehensive fire department delivery system. It is designed to provide the theoretical background and best management and operational current practices within modern fire prevention bureaus.

Medieval Ireland: Land of Saints and Scholars (3) This course will examine the history of early Medieval Ireland from the 5th -- 12th centuries. During our study, we will explore the nature of the Celtic peoples, their acceptance of the Christian faith, the development of the “Celtic/Irish Church,” conflicts with the Vikings and Anglo-Normans, and Ireland’s influence in shaping later Medieval Europe.
Note: This course meets theNon-American History requirement.

Yoga Philosophy (2) (AEH) (H) (LC) Yoga is a Sanskrit term meaning “to join;” in this case, joining the person to God. One of the six classical schools of Indian Philosophy, Yoga is known for its sophisticated articulation of philosophy and its methods of meditation to test that philosophy. This course will examine the origins of Yoga in Neolithic India, its literary history and modern expression.
Note:
The course will be 12 days in duration, divided into a set of meetings over a Saturday and Sunday with online readings before and after the course meeting.  The course meetings will take place at the Chinook Winds Resort in Lincoln City.  A deeply discounted block of oveanview rooms has been arranged for Saturday night for students enrolled in this course.  Call the resort for reservations: 1-877-423-2241.

Stress and Disease (3) (SMI) (N) (NW) This course will focus on both historical and current research in the field of psychoneuroimmunology. Emphasis will include the relationship between psychological stress and disease in humans, the physiological and psychological assessment of stress, and conditioned immune response in animals. The course will attempt to fairly present our current understanding of the relationship between psychological stress and cancer, AIDS, and infectious diseases. Experimental design limitations which have made interpretations of this research often controversial will be discussed.
