Course Challenge /
Petition for Special Examination

Capsule Description:

Students who are admitted to EOU, currently enrolled, and have completed 12 EOU credits may petition for credit for a specific course by special exam. You may not challenge a course for which you have already received a grade. Courses to demonstrate prior knowledge must be challenged before enrolling in a higher-level course in that discipline.  The assigned course instructor, the adviser, and the appropriate school dean must sign the petition form. Students educated in a language other than English cannot receive credit for that language at the first or second year level through course challenge. See the EOU General Academic catalog for more information.

Full Description:

If you wish to challenge a Distance Education course offered through EOU, the following procedure is required:

  • Review the course challenge section in the EOU General Academic Catalog. If requirements are met, proceed with the request.
  • Contact the instructor teaching the DDE course to discuss your desire to challenge the course.
  • If the instructor approves your request to challenge the course:
    1. Download form titled "Petition for Special Examination/Course Challenge (For Distance Education Students)" from www.eou.edu/dde/webadv/forms/registration/Challenge.pdf .
    2. Complete Part One of the Petition--your name, ID number, address, instructor's name, course prefix/number, course title, credit hours, your signature, reason you feel you have competency in this area, grade request (S/U or A through F).
    3. Send the petition along with $50/credit and your unofficial transcript to your adviser. Your transcript can be downloaded from Webster at www.ous.edu/webster. Your adviser will initiate the procedures necessary to complete the administrative process.

When the petition is fully approved by the adviser, course instructor, and dean of the academic school, the instructor will be responsible for administration of the special examination.

  • The exam may be one already used for the course or one that the instructor specially prepares.
  • The instructor will provide the specific directions for taking the exam (specify if exam is open or closed book, open or closed note, specific software requirements, time allowance, etc).
  • The student may use his/her regular proctor.  The instructor can send the exam in one of the two following ways:
    1. Send to DDE to send to the proctor.  Proctor would return the completed exam to DDE to forward to the instructor.
    2. Send directly to proctor. Proctor would return the completed exam directly to the instructor.

  • The instructor will grade the exam, post the grade on the "Petition for Special Examination," and send the petition to the Registrar's Office.

  • The student can check on Webster at www.ous.edu/webster to obtain grade (if passing grade was issued).
