Instructional Technology Quick Tips--Using Newsreaders: Anyone who explores the world wide web will soon end up with a long list of bookmarks or favorites--listing many more sites than can actually be visited regularly. News readers (also called news aggregators) allow a web reader to pull down information from sites that contain RSS feeds whenever those sites are updated, without the necessity of visiting each specific web address to check on whether there is anything new. RSS stands for "rich site syndication," it is a new web technology that allows web sites to broadcast or syndicate updated information that can be aggregated and read in news readers. Two popular, free, easy-to-use, online news readers are NewsIsFree. and Bloglines. Another popular, free news reader, that can installed on the user's computer, is AmphetaDesk. Whether you want to be kept up to date on personal weblogs or on the New York Times, using news readers is the efficient way to stay current. Faculty can use news readers to track sites within their disciplinary areas of interest; they can also have students use news readers to track course-related information and in-class weblogs.
