Instructional Technology Quick Tips--Googlealert: Most students and instructors are familiar with the search engine Google but may not know about the extremely useful 24/7 search service that can be used to supplement individual searches, Googlealert. The free sign up allows users of the Googlealert search service to specify up to five search terms that will be searched automatically every day. When new resources are found online that meet the search criteria the user receives an email listing of the new resources. Using Googlealert is an efficient way to obtain automatic updates about areas of academic interest. For scholars and instructors the updates can tell them about new online information in their disciplines; for students the updates can tell them about resources relevant to their studies. Googlealert describes the service this way, "Automatically track anything on the Web. Search Google daily and receive new search results by email." The service can be configured to automatically do new searches or to do the searches only when the user logs in to Googlealert. The search results can be displayed via email and through a web browser; advanced users can also set up an rss Googlealert feed to their news readers. For more detailed instructions about using Googlealert see GrabtheBasics.
