Summer of Service Program
In
the summer
of 2003, The Cornerstone Program began a new Summer of Service program,
with the debut of the Public Art and Service Institute.
Students
in the Institute completed an oral history and public art project
on The Hen Party, a group of notable local women who horse camped
in the Wallowa Mountains each summer for many years in the mid twentieth
century. Mrs. Gerda Brownton, the last living member of the Hen Party,
was the primary source of information.
You
may read about the work of these students in a La Grande Observer
article about the institute. The full text of the oral history project,
done in collaboration with the Union County Oregon History Project,
is available in pdf. version. Please
