How To Access The Internet with your Computer via Modem

Setting up a Dial-Up Connection for Windows XP

Note: you do not need to use these directions if connecting to the Network here on campus-only if using a Modem (using the telephone line) from on or off campus.

In order to complete these instructions, you will need the following:

  • A working modem
  • A working phone line
  • An @eou.edu email login and password
    • (only available to current students and graduates of EOU)
  • 15-45 minutes

Making a connection - Click the Start button and select Control Panels from the list.

Select Network and Internet Connections from the choices that are presented. From the list under Pick a Task, select Set up or change your Internet connection.

In the window that opens, be sure that the Connections tab is selected, and press the Setup button near the top of the window.

You may be asked to setup your current location.If so, entering your Area Code should be all that is required.

When you have done that you will be returned to the New Connection Wizard.

Click the Next button at the bottom of the window. Ensure that Connect to the Internet is selected and press Next . Select Set up my connection manually and press Next . Select Connect using a dial-up modem and press Next . Type EOU in the dialog box and press Next .

Enter your user name as you enter it for the webmail system. This is user name only, not your full email address. Enter your password in to the next two boxes. Most users should leave the three check boxes checked.

Press Next when you are finished. If you would like a link to this connection placed on the desktop, click the check box. Press Finish .

Configure a connection - Under " pick a Control Panel icon " select Network Connections . Right click on the connection labeled EOU and select Properties from the pull-down menu.

Select the Networking tab from the row at the top of the window. Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) by clicking on it and press the Properties button.

Select Use the following DNS server addresses .

In the box for Preferred DNS server enter [140.211.50.10], the Alternate DNS server is [140.211.60.15].

Press Ok and then press Ok again.

Connecting - You are now ready to connect to the Internet through the Eastern Oregon University dial-up system.

Double click either the connection labeled EOU or the shortcut on the desktop if you made one in step one. Your username and password should already be filled in. If they are not, enter them now.

Press the Dial button.

  • 15-45 minutes
  • You may need the Windows 95, 98 or ME CD or disks

1. Check for software - Click on the Start Button and choose Settings, and then Control Panel . Double-click on the Network icon. This will bring up your network configuration window. In this window, there should be one Client for Microsoft Networks, one Dial-up Adapter and one TCP/IP Protocol. If these icons are NOT there, go to step 2. If they are, skip ahead to step 3.

Note: you may see other icons in this window as well.

2. Obtaining Dial-Up Adapter, Client or TCP-IP , - (Have your Windows CD or disks ready)

Stay in the Control Panel/Network window from #1. Click on the Add button and choose the missing items (Adapter, Client or Protocol). Choose the appropriate Microsoft item. Click on Have Disk .

Windows should copy the necessary software from your disk or CD.Push the OK button, and you should be back at the Network Window .Push the OK button again and allow the computer to restart.

3. Making a connection - Double click on My Computer and then on Dial-up Networking .

Double click the Make New Connection icon.

Type a name for this connection (any name will do).Push the Next button. In the field labeled Telephone Number,

4. Setting DNS Configuration - Right click on the connection you just created, and choose Properties from that menu. Choose Server Type (either a button at the bottom or a tab at the top) or Networking for ME, then TCP/IP settings.)

Select Specify name server addresses and input these numbers:

primary: 140.211.50.10
secondary: 140.211.60.15 click OK , and click OK one more time.

5. Connecting - Now that you have your connection, you need only to double click on it, enter your user name (your email login/account name) and password (email password) and push the connect button to connect to EOU. After the modem connects, double click on Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. Be sure to test it by searching for different sites. If no web pages open go back through the steps one more time. settings
