New Member Retention Organization from within Once a person joins an organization, they will want some sort of structure to work within: for example, keeping a president, vice president and officers is a good start; having those officers keep clear records, know what is going on within the organization, and keeping projects and events organized helps to eliminate frustration. Creating a friendly and welcoming work environment If a new member is not feeling needed or welcome, they will not come back. The key is to get them involved from the beginning. Include them in on social opportunities, event planning, and invite them to help out with some of the important aspects of the organization. Do not overwhelm, but be aware of their need to be a part of the group. A shared vision can make or break an organization If the members believe in the same things for the future of the group and their group s mission, then they will invest in the organization. As they become more involved they can help to accomplish goals, whereas if now one knows what you are focused on, they will not strive to do better. Offer resources to your members People join organizations because they are looking to gain something from it. Become a resource yourself, be being active within the campus community with a variety of departments and faculty and staff. Provide resources, such as officer binders and manuals, access to the organization files, and access to your advisor. Also, offer them the opportunity to become an officer, so they can gain leadership experience and skills. Engaging new members consists of being visible. Having a solid purpose, through a vision, mission and goals; welcoming new members, through inclusiveness; and offering new members resources that are unique to your organization.
