UNIVERSITY
MISSION
Eastern
Oregon University is an exemplary student-centered institution.
We are dedicated to serving Oregon and beyond through intellectually challenging
and personalized programs of instruction, research, and service. We have
a special commitment to the educational, social, cultural, and economic
needs of eastern Oregon.
VISION
We
focus on learning.
We
recruit and retain students who are motivated, prepared, and responsible,
ready to enter our learning partnership.
We
recruit and support faculty who have high professional standards, who
view teaching as the sharing of learning, and who employ innovation in
their courses and in their scholarship. They are active mentors to students
as accessible and caring advisors, teachers, and researchers. They are
enthusiastic generalists who create an open intellectual community through
inter-disciplinary collegiality.
Our curriculum
is vital and flexible, retaining the best of the traditional liberal arts
foundation and welcoming opportunities to meet new learning needs.
We prepare
professionals in education and other selected fields.
Students
share a broad-based general education experience that prepares them to
be critical thinkers, effective communicators, life-long learners, and
aesthetically, ethically, and scientifically literate citizens.
Students
experience the opportunity for independent artistic creation, research,
and scholarship, and we publicly celebrate the results of such accomplishment.
Our student
services are integrated into academic life as essential components of
a successful and productive learning experience.
We value
a sense of place.
We hold
in high regard the natural beauty of our region and value respectful stewardship
of the land that sustains us.
We apply
what we learn to the global context, testing the lessons of our place
in the world through study abroad, service learning, internships, and
practica.
We recognize
and honor differences as well as celebrate the similarities we share as
human beings. We welcome diversity in our students and employees and strive
to understand and appreciate other cultures, traditions, and approaches
to learning.
We believe
that learning is a communal endeavor requiring mutual respect. We practice
collaborative governance.
We use
technology to bring the remote to Eastern and to extend Eastern to a geographically
broad student body.
We welcome
collaborations and learning partnerships that enhance and amplify the
possibilities of our place.
We serve
as a resource center and catalyst for regional achievements in public
service, business, education, and the arts.
ACADEMIC
DEGREES AND PROGRAMS
Academic
programs at Eastern Oregon University are offered
through the School of Arts and Sciences
and the School of Education and Business.
In
addition, programs in Agriculture, in cooperation with Oregon State University,
and the baccalaureate degree in Nursing through the Oregon Health Sciences
University, and the Engineering Program offered through Portland State
University are offered on this campus.
Eastern
also offers an Honors Baccalaureate degree for qualified students and
the Cornerstone Experience.
Cornerstone Program
Eastern Oregon University is committed to challenging
students to explore the world
outside of the regular curriculum. By looking towards the future, and
the impact of
globalization, students are strongly encouraged to participate in all
four cornerstones.
These four are:
I International Experience
Whether through travel, study abroad, language preparation
or a combination, an International Experience will help prepare students
for careers in the global society. If students choose to study abroad
the opportunities are endless.
II Community Service Learning
Engaging in the community to fill a need by working
with an agency is a very important learning opportunity. Students may
work with young children, develop a city-wide recycling program, develop
a brochure for a non-profit organization, develop a birthday party plan
for a local retirement home, etc. Many classes on campus have a Service
Learning component within that class, or the student may sign up for SSCI
207a one credit class with a service learning component.
III Internships
Classroom knowledge can be put to work through structured
internships or practica. This provides the student with valuable hands-on
work-related experience in their major prior to graduation. Internships
are available for pay and/or credit in business, education, government
and industry, locally and around the world. Students work with their advisors
and incorporate career-related experiences into their academic plan by
registering for academic credit (209 or 409.)
IV Research or Creative Activity with Faculty
In each degree program students have the opportunity
to conduct research with faculty members and then present this research
at the annual spring symposium and/or at regional or national conferences.
All students are highly encouraged
to engage in the four cornerstones prior to graduation.
Students completing the experiences will be recognized at graduation and
will have that
completion noted on their transcripts.
The opportunities at Eastern
Oregon University are endless; the experiences are
unforgettable; the benefits are limitless.
