INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Applicants who are not United States citizens or immigrants are considered for admission to EOU as international students.

INTERNATIONAL FRESHMEN ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be considered for admission, international students applying directly from high school must have:

1. The equivalent to a "standard" U.S. high school diploma ("modified," "honorary," or other "non-standard" diplomas are not recognized.) (In English)

2. A grade point average equivalent to a 3.00 on the U.S. 4.00 scale.

3. English language proficiency as demonstrated by achieving a score of 520 on the test of English as a Second Language (TOEFL) exam or satisfactory completion of Level 109 in an English Language School.

4. Students must be in "legal status" standing with the Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS).

5. Verification of financial backing through bank statements and affidavits of support.

INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be considered for admission, transfer students must have:

1. The equivalent of a minimum of a 2.25 cumulative GPA on the U.S. 4.00 scale taken from an accredited college or university. Students with fewer than 30 transferable credits must also meet the Freshmen requirements listed above. (Must be in English)

2. English language proficiency as demonstrated by achieving a minimum score of 520 on the TOEFL examination or completion of Writing 121 in the U.S. with an "A" or " B" grade.

3. Students must be in "legal status" standing with the Department of Immigration and Naturalization Services (INS).

MEDICAL INSURANCE

ALL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE MEDICAL INSURANCE.

The insurance must be purchased at registration for the entire year and must be kept current during the student's enrollment at Eastern. If the student's parent(s) or government provides major medical insurance coverage for the student, proof of the coverage must be provided to the International Admission & Immigration Adviser upon arrival.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADVISER

Admission and immigration counseling is available for international students through the International Student Admissions and Immigration Advisor. The advisor acts as a liaison between international students and their sponsoring agencies, and provides assistance in the interpretation of immigration laws and regulations. You may contact the International Student Admissions and Immigration Advisor via email at admissions@eou.edu. General advising and counseling is available for international student through the International Student Academic Advisor. The International Student Academic Advisor will help students become acquainted with EOU and the La Grande community, find solutions for academic concerns, financial maters and personal or social situations.

TRANSPORTATION TO LA GRANDE

The closest international airport is in Portland, Oregon (260 miles west of La Grande). The nearest airport is in Pendleton, 50 miles to the northwest of La Grande. Greyhound Bus Lines serve La Grande, and taxi service is available in the city. All International Students, when they first arrive in La Grande, will be met at the Pendleton Airport or the La Grande bus station.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADMISSION PROCEDURES

Send all items listed below numbered 1-6 to the International Admission & Immigration Advisor, Eastern Oregon University, One University Boulevard, La Grande, OR 97850.

1. Completed EOU application for admission.

2. U.S. $50 non-refundable application fee.

The fee must be in U.S. currency by draft/check payable to Eastern Oregon University. The application fee will not be waived, deferred or returned. Your application will not be processed without payment.

3. Proof of English language proficiency. Official TOEFL score reports should be send directly to Eastern Oregon University from the Educational Testing Service or English Language School reports, directly from the ESL school.

4. Evidence of adequate financial resources for your studies at Eastern Oregon University. This must include an affidavit of support and an official statement from the bank certifying that adequate financial resources in U.S. dollars are available to meet your educational expenses for four years or the duration of intended stay. A total of $13,600 is necessary for each year. The necessary documentation of proof of financial support is required prior to being admitted. Eastern does not have financial aid available for international students.

5. Official transcript(s) from every institution, college, university or post-secondary school attended. Transcript(s) must be in a certified English translation.

6. All International students are required to live in a residence hall their freshman year. A separate application and U.S. fee of $25 must be made payable to the Residence Life office by June 1.

7. All students must show proof of measles immunization prior to registering for the second term. If you have had the measles vaccinations in your home country, bring proof with you, or you will have another series of vaccinations on campus.

NOTIFICATION OF ADMISSION

Successful applicants will receive a letter of acceptance and an I-20 form necessary for obtaining an F-1 student visa. ADMISSION STATUS WILL BE DETERMINED UPON RECEIPT OF ALL REQUIRED CREDENTIALS.

VISA APPLICATION

Foreign students must appear before a United States Consulate in order to secure an F-1 student visa. The following items must be presented:

a. Form I-20 (Certified of Eligibility issued by Eastern Oregon University).

b. A valid passport.

c. Proof of sufficient financial support.

MAJOR PROGRAM ADMISSION

Some major programs at EOU have their own set of admission requirements. Admission to the university does not guarantee admission to a program. To learn the admission requirements for any program, please refer to the major program description in this catalog.
