Employment during college is a necessity for many students. But in addition to income, employment can provide valuable career information. A part-time job in a setting that is related to your career interests offers an excellent opportunity to investigate specific work settings.

The application process for teaching candidates has been experiencing rapid change. Technology has provided speedier ways to discover openings, its also allows teachers to apply to some districts online. Who knows how the application process will evolve as technology changes the way we do most everything?
The word today in education job search is: Self-manage. For as long as most people can remember Career Advising has been in the middle of the process by assisting graduates in the construction of a 'candidate file.' Currently the file contains copies of one's student teaching evaluation and 5-7 letters of reference. Once constructed, we send a copy of the file to school districts as per a student's request. There are many reasons for our involvement in the process but those reasons no longer exist or are slowly giving way to changing preferences. More and more school districts are asking for three letters of reference -or- a candidate file. This means that applicants can collect their own non-confidential references and copy and send them along with other applicant materials.
The Career Advising staff assists education students as they prepare to enter the job market. Through workshops, materials and individual consultation, we will assist you in presenting yourself well on paper and in person. At this time we no longer establish condidate files. We assist students in self-managing their own references. Alumni with established files are being advised on how to navigate this time of transition.
Career Advising receives announcements of position openings in education, which are condensed and made available in the form of an Education Employment Bulletin available on the Career Advising website free of charge. The bulletin is not inclusive of all job openings. We recommend you also check a variety of other resources located within our Job Search Information for Education majors page. Districts also post their openings on their websites. Directly contacting districts of interest is recommended.
Career Advising sponsors Career Fairs and seminars for students in various academic disciplines. Local and regional employers visit campus and promote job opportunities with graduating seniors. In the spring, Eastern participates in the Oregon Liberal Arts Placement Consortium (OLAPC) Jobs Fair in the Portland area. It is sponsored by a consortium of small colleges and universities. Over 100 employers attend from throughout the Northwest. Dates and deadlines for events are obtained on the Career Advising Home Page or by contacting Career Advising.
