There are many creative ways to construct your resume. However, always keep in mind who will be reading one's resume and the type of position one is seeking.
Although it is not essential, having your resume printed is an option. The easiest method is to prepare the document on a computer and print it on high quality paper using a laser printer. A dot matrix printer is not acceptable for a professional resume. Be certain the copies are of very high quality. Make sure there are no typographical or content errors. This document represents you. It should make the best possible first impression. Career Advising has samples of the work done by other students.
Remember that a resume may be one or two pages in length. Unless you have extensive work experience, keep it to one page.
Omit all personal pronouns. Avoid wordiness and strive for conciseness. Use phrases instead of lengthy sentences and start such phrases with an action verb in the past tense. (Examples: directed, supervised, etc.)
Remember the employer will give your resume the 20-30 second scan test. With this in mind, read-ability, eye appeal, and a total positive impression should be your goals. Generous spacing and separation of the components of your resume will help you achieve this effect. You may want to bold and/or capitalize key headings, job titles, etc. Avoid using too many lines and underlines. If computers are used to scan your resume, they may get confused by the lines. Special considerations are needed for resumes that will be scanned or submitted to the internet or via e-mail. See the Riley Guide for specific advice.
Always have your resume prepared on quality bond paper of at least 20-pound weight. Knowing your audience is your best guide to the selection of paper, color, and design. Generally speaking, employers are cautious and conservative in their views and prefer resumes in an off-white, ivory, light tan, or light gray color, although gray does not copy well.
