The most universal audio and video player on computers is the Windows Media Player, so we recommend that audio and video files be saved in formats which can be played in the Windows Media Player -- which in any case should be set as your default player. Generally, the file formats you should use would be .wma and .mp3 for audio files and .wmv for video files.. Since codecs and file formats change over time, we recommend that audio files be created and saved as .wav files and then converted to .wma files, or alternately, .mp3 files. Doing so will allow you to go to your source .wav files and convert them to future popular formats.
Your computer may have come with an audio editing program preloaded. For example, if you have a Creative Sound Blaster audio card on your computer, you may also have received the Creative audio editing suite when you purchased the computer. A free program for creating and editing audio files is Audacity, which can be downloaded at no cost at audacity.sourceforge.net. Audacity will export files in the .wav format. You must install this encoder in Audacity for it to export .mp3 files.
Your computer may have come with a video editing program preloaded, such as Windows Movie Maker. If you need a video editing program, two programs with a reasonable cost are Nero 8 Ultra Edition, which can be purchased at www.nero.com and AVS Super Bundle, which can be purchased at www.avsmedia.com.
