Mountaineers Victim to Geoduck Upset

OLYMPIA, Wash. - For the second night in a row, the Evergreen State Geoducks have upset leading conference teams. Last night, Evergreen defeated number three in the CCC College of Idaho 79-71. Tonight the Geoducks (9-18, 8-10 Cascade Collegiate Conference) got the best of the second best in the CCC and number 23 in the nation Eastern Oregon University (22-4, 15-3 CCC), 67-63.

The team had great home crowd support and by the time Evergreen went into to the locker room at the end of the first period, the Greenhouse was rockin' to the tune of a 32-25 point lead.

Eastern Oregon never let up. They went on a run in the first five minutes of the second half. First, Jenny Fiso hit a three at 13 minutes and then Elise Hawes added another three two minutes later to help the Mounties pull ahead by seven points.

Evergreen answered back with their own run starting with a field goal by Joy White and then Kristi Auckland, who scored the game high of 18 points, hit two field goals and two free throws to pull within two. Jennifer Solberg tied the game with a field goal at five minutes remaining.

The play went back and fourth up until 50 seconds left when Hawes hit another key three pointer to bring EOU ahead by one. Following a timeout by EOU, Evergreen's Molly Clark connected a 3 point shot, putting ESC in the lead by two with 25 seconds left. EOU was forced to foul and sent White to the line where she made both attempts to seal the victory.

Tiffanie Ulmer was EOU's leading scorer with 16 points and five rebounds. Hawes made two of three, three point attempts to add to her 12 point total.

Eastern Oregon will need to rebound quick from the loss, because the Mounties travel to I-84 rival The College of Idaho on Tuesday, Feb. 19. On Jan. 15 in La Grande, EOU won the season's first installment of the I-84 Cup, 68-50. The 'Yotes (16-9, 13-5 CCC) fell to Northwest University Saturday night in Kirkland, Wash.
