Women's highlights: Onkto scores well in Heptathlon:
Erin Onkto put together a strong second day in the heptathlon to set a new PR score by several hundred points and place 6th. all in all Erin had 6 event PRs within the scope of the meet. Meanwhile 51 year old Carla Hoppie put together a solid day, with the exception of the Javelin to finish 7th.
In other action the women's hammer group had a good showing with Trish Harshberger leading the way for EOU with her second place finish. Trish was in the drivers seat for the win until the eventual winner (Hess from Concordia ) put together a monster PR for the win. Overall EOU had 5 of the top 8 point scores in the event!
Elsewhere in the field events, both Cayla Weissert (1st) and Mary Wright(5th) competed very well, with Mary setting a new PR by 4 inches.
On the track, the women's 4 x 100 (Beach, Abesa, Gillespie, Harmon) ran a seasons best. Abesa and Dani Murphy ran seasons best in the 100. In the 100 Hurdles, Shauna Dahlin came out of the slow heat to run a PR and finish in the final scoring spot (8th), Weissert set a PR to finish well. Kasie Gillespie got tangled up in some hurdles to finish 4th.
Gillespie had a busy day, also placing in the 400 and Long Jump.
One of the main highlights of the meet was Marcella Bosch winning her third straight title in the 1500 and almost setting the meet record with a 4 second PR and an NAIA auto qualifying mark.
Men: Big Highlights and some rough Spots:
Field Events- throws. The men's throws group had a rough day, especially in the shot put, although Jason Dunten finished out his college career in pretty good order with two solid performances in the shot and hammer.
In the Long Jump, the guys came up pretty strong with three top of the top 5 and 4 in the finals (9 make finals) with Freshman Kirk Miller winning it all.
In the Decathlon, LaGrande Fr. Nathan Humphreys came back with a strong second day to set a total (over two days) of 6 Decathlon PR's (several of them life time bests) and tied another...with four of those (and the PR tie) coming today. With the biggest one coming in the Javelin where he PR'd by almost 15 feet.
On the Track:
The day started off big with the steeplechase an event that saw Troy Blackburn winning and hitting an NAIA Auto standard and Cameron Starner running a PR to finish second with an NAIA Provisional mark.
Up next was the men's 4 x 100 ( Truman, Schmidt, Ohmes and Wise) where the EOU squad won for the 3rd year in a row and narrowly missed the school record set by last years conference winning squad.
In the 1500, Doug Benson made a strong bid for the win and came up second (he was ranked second coming in) with a PR. Dougs time is also the throed fastest time in meet history. Back behind him , Zach Heath ended up 9th, but sacrificed some of his own chances to help Doug by holding his position early in the race to keep another runner (the eventual winner) pinned down against the inside rail of the track while Doug hammered away up front. Fr. J. Roy ran a very strong race to set a life time PR by 11 seconds and finish 4th!
In the 110 hurdles, EOU took a hit when pre meet favorite Chris Hoppie had a rare (for him) false start to get DQ'd. Lucas Ohmes and Robert Manwell ran strong races to finish first and 7th (they were ranked 2nd and 8th).
In the 400 meter race, Drew Wise ran a very impressive race out of the second fastest heat to win his heat and place 6th overall with a big PR. In the fast heat, 800 meter specialist Adam Goulet ran a stellar race to finish 4th overall and almost crack the 50 second barrier.
The final event of the day was the 100 meter dash and event that was perhaps the overall best team performance of the day for EOU when Schmidt was 2nd, Kirk Miller was 4th, Ohmes was 6th and Truman was 7th.
At the end of the day, both squads were sitting in second place, the men by a mere half a point.
