Katie Clapp's second place finish in the women's 10,000 meters highlighted day one at the Cascade Collegiate Conference championships in Gresham, Oregon.
The junior from Clackamas ran a 39:47:88 race, and was only one of two runners under 40 minutes. Clapp was also 22 seconds shy of a NAIA provisional time and 36 seconds shy of Northwest University's Beth Knudtson's meet record set last year in La Grande.
That is until Knudtson beat her own record on day one. Knudtson shattered the NAIA auto qualifying time of 38:45:35 by running a 37:38:49 on the Mt. Hood Community College track.
La Grande native Nathan Humphreys finished third in the high jump and 100 meters, and fourth in the shot put. The freshman sits in the middle of the pack heading into day two.
