On March 29th Cassie Smith got on a plane and flew to Valdivia, Chile for a program that allowed her to study abroad and earn credits towards graduation.  The senior to be, spent the better part of four months taking classes, learning about the world and yes... playing soccer.

Smith, an English major and Spanish minor, was the recipient of the Ragsdale Scholarship Award in the Spring for her performance in the classroom.

Cassie spent about 3 hours a day in the classroom.   She spent considerably more time learning about life and the world in the general during her travels in South America.  "The trip was positive and enlightening, I have a greater knowledge of the world and less fear about it, having spent all of that time traveling by myself." said Smith.

The defensive specialist also got a chance to sharpen her skills on the field, playing "football" with the locals.

That practice is sure to help the Mountie Soccer team as they look to improve on last years record breaking season.  A season that saw the team go 11-6 overall and 7-2 in conference.

The Mountaineers will kick off the season with three exhibition matches starting with the Alumni Scrimmage on Saturday, August 18th at the EOU soccer field.  Their first preseason match will be on August 30 when they travel to Nampa, Idaho to face NCAA Division II foe Northwest Nazarene.
