La Grande, Ore. – The Eastern Oregon soccer team came out aggressive today and upset NAIA No. 8 ranked Carroll College 2-1. With the victory, the Mountaineers (8-4, 5-1 CCC) record their first ever win against a ranked team.
Senior forward Kristen Rice (Eugene, Ore./Marist HS) scored both goals for the Mountaineers and freshman goalkeeper Molly Sumpter (Sultan, Wash./Sultan HS) had an outstanding performance with seven saves and numerous aggressive stops.
Rice’s first goal came off her corner kick in the 17th minute which sailed through the hands of Saint’s goalkeeper Nikki Skaggs. Play continued for about ten seconds until the assistant referee brought to attention the fact that the ball did indeed cross the goal line.
Carroll answered back in the 37th minute when Bobbi Allard’s shot bounced off of Eastern defender Tara Moran for a goal.
The Mounties used the intermission to refuel and scored in the 57th minute off of what Head Coach Colleen Fagan called a “brilliant play.” Sophomore midfielder Lori Wilson (Battle Ground, Wash./Battle Ground HS) placed the ball perfectly for Rice who had beat her defender and then strategically placed the ball out of the reach of an extended Skaggs from thirty yards out.
“Our defense dominated the center today,” said Fagan. “Cydney (Topping) and Tara (Moran) did an excellent job winning every ball in the air. We knew that we couldn’t catch up with Carroll’s speed and Molly (Sumpter) did a great job coming off her line and taking away their opportunities.”
Sumpter, who stepped in for the Mounties last week after junior goalkeeper Kristina Kennedy (Bellingham, Wash./Mt. Baker HS) came out of the Corban game with an injury, was prepared for today’s challenge. “I knew that I’d be busy today. I wanted to come out strong and let Carroll’s forwards know that I was ready to be aggressive.” Sumpter added that the past few practices helped EOU prepare for this quick Saints team. “All week we worked on communication and it paid off today.”
EOU faces another tough regional opponent on Sunday as they host University of Great Falls. Game time is 3:00pm at the Mountaineer soccer field.
