La Grande, Ore. - Team defense for the Mountaineer soccer team has been a key all year, and this weekend showed exactly why.  The team defeated Oregon Tech on Friday by a score of 2-0, and followed it up by blanking Southern Oregon on Saturday, 3-0.

After going scoreless in the first half on Friday, the Mountaineers punched in two second half goals.  Freshman Courtney Gaskell scored the first goal unassisted in the 51st minute.  Then a pair of seniors hooked up for the second goal as Cydney Topping scored off a Kristen Rice assist.

Oregon Tech only put two shots on goal, and had three the entire game.  Eastern had 24 total shots taken.

On Saturday, the scoring started a bit earlier, as Freshman Ashley Julian scored in the 32nd minute off a Chanell Banghart assist.  Then another Freshman Tennly Paul-Bowden scored off a Rice assist in the 66th minute.

In the 75th minute the Mountaineers scored again, on Junior Andi Jakubowski’s goal, with an assist from Julian.  Again the team out shot their opponent, this time by a ten shot margin.

Junior Goalkeeper Kristina Kennedy registered a clean sheet for the weekend with five saves between both games.  The Mountaineers travel this weekend to play Warner Pacific on Friday September 29 at 2:00 p.m. and Corban College on Saturday September 30 at 1:00 p.m.
