Nampa, Idaho - The Mountaineers soccer team had a strong performance this weekend, going undefeated in the Arthur D. Ortman Invitational tournament in Nampa, Idaho.
On Friday the team blanked Albertson College 2-0. Junior Jen Junk and Freshman Allie Kirby each scored as the Mountaineers defense stifled the Lady ‘Yotes.
“Our defense was strong,” Coach Colleen Fagan said. “We were also able to score both our goals on set pieces, which is great this early in the season.”
On Saturday the Mountaineers got out to an early lead on Northwest Nazarene University going into halftime up 2-0. NNU scored early in the second half to make it 2-1, but that’s how the game would end.
Freshman Tennly Paul-Bowden and Junior Tara Moran led the Mountaineer attack, each scoring a goal. Coach Fagan said that the defense has been very good.
“It was our defense that really shut down their attack. We usually go to this tournament and don’t do as well as we’d like, so to come away with two wins is terrific.”
The Mounties will travel to Central Washington University on September 9, and will continue to Burnaby, British Columbia to play #4 ranked Simon Fraser University on September 11.
