La Grande, Ore - On Monday the Eastern Women's Basketball Team did their part to promote safety for kids.  Playing the role of Smokey the Bear, Sparky the fire dog as well as dressing up as crash dummies, the Mountaineers helped make safety fun in honor of National Safe Kids Week.

As bus load, after bus load of elementary school kids arrived at the Blue Mt. Convention Center the team greeted them with open arms.  It was the fourth consecutive year that Head Coach Anji Weissenfluh's team has helped out at this event.

During Coach Weissenfluh's tenure as coach at EOU her teams have been very involved in the community.  From raking leaves to "kids night out", Anji's teams have long been a presence off the court.

Just a couple of weeks ago the team was involved in the Pathways Career Day for 8th Graders.  The event was held on April 13th at Powder Valley School in an effort to give students hands on learning through a pathway of their choice.

Players helped in a variety of capacities including, manning the tables and working with Unior, Baker, Grant and Wallowa County students in a variety of career areas.

The Women's Basketball Team's success on the floor has been well publicized.  In fact, EOU is fresh off a 25-7 season in which the team was crowned Conference Champions and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament.  It is nice to know that while winning is important (very important) it is not the everything.
