A couple of sophomores will be competing in the NAIA National Meet held in Johnson City Tennessee. Kasie Gillespie and Lucas Ohmes will compete in the Pentathlon and Heptathlon, respectively. The meet runs from Thursday the 8th to Saturday the 10th, Kasie and Lucas will participate in the first two days.
Kasie Gillespie: Pentathlon
Kasie is a seasoned competitor and after taking a year off upon graduating from Clackamas Community College, she is starting to get back into the swing of things. Kasie enters the National meet ranked 7th with a qualifying mark of 3170 points- within less than a 100 points from 4th and ahead of 10th (Leader is a Sr from Doane college in Nebraska with an outstanding score of 3,820 points). So, things could be interesting, especially as the last three weeks of training have gone very well for Kasie and she is at a point where every week makes a big difference after the year off.
Kasie begins her portion of the meet on Thursday, March 8th when the Pentathlon kicks off at 1:30 p.m., east coast time.
Events are as follows:
60 meter Hurdles, High Jump, Shot Put, Long Jump and 800 meters. The 60 Hurdles is at 1:30 and after that the next event is 30 minutes from the completion of the previous event. All of the Pentathlon events will be completed by Thursday late afternoon or early evening.
Lucas Ohmes: Heptathlon.
Lucas enters a field that may be even tighter than the women's Pentathlon field. Like Kasie, the Sophomore transfer from Clackamas Community College is also headed into the National meet ranked 7th (with a score of 4427 points)...but only about 150 points out of first and less than 150 ahead of 11th! The Men's multi is also led by a Doane athlete (Forrest Gregory with a score of 4642). This is the first year of the Heptathlon (previously they contested the Pentathlon at Indoor Nationals for both genders), so things could be interesting as with the additional two events, there is more room for crazy things to happen. Lucas also enters into action on Thursday when things kick off at 1p.m. East coast time. The Heptathlon continues on Friday (March 9th) at 10:00 a.m.
Events are as follows:
Thursday: 1 p.m. Friday- 10 a.m., 60 meter dash 60 Meter Hurdles, Long Jump Pole Vault, Shot Put 1,000 meter run, High Jump
