Boise, Idaho - Competing in the best weather conditions of the season (high 70's, clear and calm), the EOU Track and Field Teams put together another strong weekend. This time over at Boise State University on Friday afternoon. Competing against host BSU, Northwest Nazarene, Albertson College and Treasure Valley Community College, Eastern came away with 6 overall event winners and to new school records.
The Throws:
We had another solid day here, with Grace Deboodt and Tiffany Ulmer finishing 1-2 in the women's Javelin, with both hitting seasons bests and Tiffany joining Grace on the EOU all time top 5 list at # 5 ( Grace remains at #4, but moved within a few inches of # 3).
In the Hammer, the ladies pretty much all hit life time bests or close to their bests. On the men's side, Jason Dunten improved on his PR and came ever closer to the NAIA auto qualifying mark with about a 6 foot PR. Travis Millsap also recorded a season's best.
In the Shot Put and Discus, Carla Hoppie and Josh Ross both had PR's in the shot, while Tiffany and Mitch Wheelhouse once again led both events for the team.
The Jumping Events:
Kayla Weissert once again jumped right at 11 feet in the Pole Vault for the win. Tennly Paul-Bowden recorded a seasons best to earn second place. Lucas Ohmes jumped very well to win, especially as he had to leave to run the 110 high hurdles in the middle of the Vault.
In the Long Jump, Alex Lostcutoff made her debut and Chris Hoppie put together a strong series to move into the number two spot on the EOU all time list.
Running events:
Hurdles: Chelsee Harmon ran another solid race in the 100 meter hurdles, despite the race being called back about 3 hurdles into the race for a timing system malfunction.
In the men's Hurdles we saw two more of our team event wins as Ohmes won the 110 meter highs and Adam Miller won the 400 intermediates with a furious finish and an NAIA Provisional qualifying mark.
Short Sprints action saw a slew of fine races in the three short sprints (100, 200 and 400). Matt Lane led the charge with the first of two school records for the day, winning the 400. He also missed the NAIA Auto Qualifying mark by a very slim margin of .01 of a second. Matt previously held the school record at 48.90 seconds and ran 48.55 for the win. We also saw a number of season and or life time PR's by the other individuals. Including a very strong run by Dani Reis in the 200 in which she not only shattered her previous PR by half a second, she narrowly missed making it onto our all time top five list.
Mid Distance/ Distance : We had a much better day in the 800 with all four of the athletes running the 800 running season best marks and competing well.
In the 1500, Marcella Bosch and Zach Heath both competed well to finish third, with Zach racing for the win until the last 100 meters or so and recording yet another life time PR. Sara Bates and Doug Benson both ran life time PR's as well. Doug won the slower section of the men's 1500 with an evenly paced race.
In the 3,000 meter run, we were led by Katie Clapp and Troy Blackburn who both recorded PR's in the event.
Relays:
Both the "Short" relays (the 4 x 100) suffered, in an odd sort of way, from running too fast as we had some exchange issues, yet the women's relay of Reis, Kasie Gillespie, Dani Murphy and Harmon still managed to run the second fastest time of the year and the third fastest time in school history. The men's quartet of Nathan Schmidt, Lane, Ohmes and Miller also had exchange problems but managed to improve on their season best mark.
In the "Long" Relay (the 4 x 400), we did not have the exchange issue we had in the 4 x 100 and the women's team of Reis, Deboodt, Gillespie and Murphy shaved another 1.13 seconds off of the school record they set last week. EOU finished second behind BSU and dipped under the 4:00 minute barrier for the first time in school history. Dani Reis ran over a second faster than last week and the other three running almost duplicated their splits from last week.
On the men's side, we mixed things around a bit an had Matt Lane lead off (he had been running third leg) then we ran Ryan Browne for the first time this year on the second leg, followed by Hoppie and Miller. The change produced the fastest time this year and the third fastest in school history. All that despite a dubious move on the final leg by the BSU anchor that almost resulted in BSU's disqualification for cutting off Miller on the back stretch. The move proved pivotal in helping them hold us off for the win.
