Ellensburg, Wash - Competing in cold, windy weather, EOU Track and Field, or perhaps “Field & Track” given the kind of day our throwers had, performed well against a host of NCAA Division 2 & 3 schools and a small handful of Cascade Conference foes. With temperatures in the high 40’s, edging into the 50’s late in the meet and winds in the 20 mph range, we are very pleased with our teams over all performances.

:

Mitch Wheelhouse and Jason Dunten both surpassed NAIA Provisional Qualifying Marks in the Hammer and set life time PR’s (Personal Records). Mitch also went on to record life time PR’s in the shot put and the discus to finish high in all three events today. Mitch’s shot put mark also is the 4th best individual mark in school history.

Tiffany Ulmer threw the 4th best mark in school history in the Discus in a fine four event day for the Mounties. She threw the Shot, Discus, Javelin and Hammer.

In all the throwers saw about 18 season and or, life time PR’s today.  Everything from the shot put to the Javelin, including a 14 foot PR by Bethany Bortz in the Discus and a three foot PR in the Javelin by former Joseph High state 1A champion, Lane Bailey who moved to 5th on the all time EOU Javelin list.

In other field events, the Pole Vaulters had a good day with Cayla Weissert winning for the women and jumping well, but just missing, at the NAIA Provisional mark.

On the track, the charge was lead by former Hermiston high runner Josh Ego with a win in the 5,000 meter run in a life time PR, despite the very windy conditions.

While Josh was the only overall event winner on the track, we had several heat winners including Sara Bates in the second heat of the 1500, Dani Reis in the 2nd heat of the 400 and Nathan Schmidt in the 3rd heat of the 100.

On the relay front, despite some rough handoffs, the women’s 4 x 100 (Dani Reis, Grace DeBoodt, Dani Murphy and Chelsee Harmon) recorded the 5th fastest mark in school history and the men improved on their mark of last week by a wide margin. In the 4 x 400 we ran primarily middle distance and distance folks working on speed and the men’s 4 x 400 (Zach Heath, Adam Goulet, Lane Bailey and John Aguirre) recorded a surprising 6th place overall finish by finishing 2nd in the 2nd heat.

If one were to look closely at the results and had a list of team members life time PR’s, you would find a large number of fine performances and season/life time PR’s not listed above, so all in all, despite the cold, blustery conditions, we are very pleased with the over all team effort this weekend.

Next up- Cougar open at Washington State University on Saturday, April 21st.
