Kasie Gillespie and Lucas Ohmes were in action on the first day of the NAIA Indoor Championships. Gillespie, competing in the women’s Pentathlon, finished 9th with 3012 points. After a long jump of 15-3.5 worth 469 points, she ran a strong 800 finishing in 2:36.36 for 615 points.
On the men’s side Ohmes had a good first day of the two day heptathlon competition and was sitting in 6th place. In the first event, the 60m dash, he tied for 3rd in 7.28 for 785 points. He then long jumped 20-8 for 652 points and threw the shot 37-4.5 for 569 points. He closed out the first day high jumping 5-4.5 for 496 points.
Entering the second and final day of the Heptathlon competition Lucas Ohmes was sitting in the final All American spot. He opened with a solid hurdle race finishing 4th in 8.88, scoring 772 points and strengthening his hold on sixth place. However, in the next event he lost his position with a no height in the Pole Vault. This is the third time in the last 5 years a male EOU athlete has no heighted at the indoor championships. He was able to regroup and finish the competition with a good 1000m race, running 3:05.76. Those 609 points brought his total to 3,883 and finishing in 13th position. According to coach Welch, “while both athletes did not achieve what they had hoped to here, they competed well and as sophomores will be back for more in the next few years.”
