La Grande, Ore - Day one of the Cascade Conference Track and Field Championship Meet saw plenty of great weather and even better performances.  With a day in the books, The Eastern Oregon University Track and Field athletes and coaches have plenty to be happy about.  The men are currently in first place with 111 total points while the women are in second with 99 points.

 

The men saw plenty of strong performances on day one, highlighted by wins in several events.  Chris Hoppie won both the Long Jump (22' 5") and the 110M High Hurdles (15.10).

 

Mitch Wheelhouse won the discus with a throw of 149' 6". The win came in dramatic fashion as he vaulted into the lead on his final throw.

 

The 4X100 team of Nathan Schmidt, Matt Lane, Lucas Ohmes and Adam Miller blew away the competition with a time of 42.59. That time provisionaly qualifies them for the National Meet.

 

On the women's side Marcella Bosch defended her 1500M title, winning the event by almost two full seconds.  Meanwhile, the multitalented Grace Deboodt came in 3rd place in her first ever 400M race and qualified for Nationals in the Javalin with a throw of 135' 11".  The Women's 4X100 team of Danielle Reiss, Kasie Gillespie, Danielle Murphy and Chelsee Harmon also provisionly qualified for the National Meet.

 

Erin Ontko had personal bests in three seperates areas of the Heptathlon and Kasie Gillespie bounded from 6th the 2nd place in the Long Jump on her final attempt.

 

Head Coach Ben Welch was happy with his teams performance on day one, "We are competing very well and I'm very pleased with where we are sitting."  Coach Welch went on to add, "We will need good days on both sides tomorrow."
