Friday Night;
Friday night saw a handful of Mounties competing back in Nampa at Boise State's indoor facility. For EOU, we had both genders in the Distance Medley Relay (DMR) and several sprinters.
DMR's; despite several fine performances, and a win by the men over two BSU squads, both squads came up short of the goal to hit a national qualifier.
Women's Relay: consisted of Kyle Janssen on the opening 1200 meter leg, Dani Reis on the 400 meter second leg, Laura "Montana Clayton" on the 800 meter 2nd leg and Marcella Bosch on the closing 1600 meter leg. While no one ran poorly, Reis and Montana ran very solid legs.
Men's Relay: Daniel Sipko ran the 1200, Adam Miller ran the 400, Zach Heath ran the 800 and Adam Goulet anchored with the 1600 and a come from behind win.
Sprints:
We only had a couple of sprinters in the first round of things on Friday and they were as follows:
Erin Ontko for the women, continues to show improvement and ran two improved and solid races in the 60 and the 200, the 60 race being good enough to advance her to Saturday's 2 heat final.
Andrew Wise-Grittman: Like Erin, Andrew continues to get stronger and faster and ran a very solid 400, considering it is only his 2nd one ever and a solid enough 200 to qualify for Saturday's 2 heat final.
Saturday:
Saturday's session saw more improvements for EOU with several fine performances and some near misses in the area of qualification.
Throws:
Mitch Wheelhouse continues to throw well, placing and throwing well in both the Shot Put and the 35# weight throw for the second meet in a row.
Marybeth Nash saw strong seasonal improvements in the shot and Trish Harshberger had a 4 foot improvement in the 20# weight to top the performances on the day for the women.
Jumps: Newcomer Cayla Wiessert lead the jumps for EOU with a fine opening mark in her college debut in the Pole Vault with a clearance of 10'2".
Sprints: Both Erin Ontko and Andrew Wise-Grittman ran well, with Andrew running very near his outdoor PR (Personal Record) in the 200.
The women's 4 x 400 team of (in order) Dani Reis, Kyle Janssen, Dani Murphy and Kyle Janssen ran a very, very nice early season mark…..hopefully in two weeks we can get them in a good race and hit a qualifying mark for the NAIA indoor national meet.
Mid-distance/Long Sprints: This weekend, Boise State was kind enough to add a two events that are rarely run in the West in the 600 and 1,000 meter events:
In the 600, on the women's side, both Kyle Janssen and Dani Murphy took different paths (Dani went out fast and hard and Kyle went out more controlled and closed hard) and came up a bit short of the NAIA qualifying marks…..very fine performances, considering neither had run the event before.
For the men, Ryan Browne came off of being questionable to run this week due to illness and ran a very solid race.
In the 1,000 meter run, returning All American in this event, Adam Goulet lead most of the race and ended up just off the NAIA provisional mark to finish 2nd and was followed closely by a hard closing Zach Heath.
Marcella Bosch and Laura Clayton competed in the 1,000 for the women, with Laura (Montana) putting up another impressive effort.
Long Distance: This week saw EOU runners competing in the Men's 3,000 for the first time with Josh Ego and Troy Blackburn finishing close together, using different race tactics as Josh pushed the pace early to test the waters and Troy Blackburn, coming off a Christmas break injury opting for a slow, controlled start and a fast finish.
