La Grande, Ore - In a game fitting for a classic ending, four quarters were not enough to decide a winner at 2007 opening game for EOU, in fact, seven was not even enough in the 48-45 barn burner loss to Southern Oregon.
EOU got going quickly on the defensive end with an interception returned for a touchdown by Riley Devins. Devins deflected the pass at the line of scrimmage and pulled in the loose ball out of the air and ran it 66 yards for the first score, just four minutes into the game.
Southern Oregon responded with an impressive following drive with a 32 yard field goal by Corey O’Neill. Eastern marched back down the field, but had their field goal blocked by the Raider defense. The Mountie defense forced another turnover on the next SOU possession after a long reception was fumbled.
However, on the next play an Ian O’Brien pass was intercepted and returned for a 43 yard touchdown by Jared Elarmo. SOU’s quarterback Bryan Lee-Lauduski finished the quarter completing eight of nine passes for 135 yards.
The second quarter was highlighted with defense again. Devins intercepted another pass and returned it all the way to the Raider one-yard line. On the next play, Jordyn Jackson hurdled over the defense for the one-yard touchdown with 5:57 to go in the first half.
The Raiders put together a 13-play drive late in the half and capped it off with a Marlon Rosales 4-yard run, with 50 seconds left in the 2nd quarter.
The Mountaineers opened the second half with a nice drive of their own going 31 yards in seven plays and finishing with a Thomas Akers 31-yard field goal.
Defense dominated the third quarter as teams went back-and-forth, until the final five minutes when Eastern went 27 yards in seven plays and finished it with an Adam Donnelly two-yard touchdown run.
By the end of the third quarter, SOU had thrown four interceptions, and the Mountaineers gained 105 yards off those interceptions.
Raider wide receiver, Mike Greenidge did the only scoring of the fourth quarter, catching a 45-yard pass for a touchdown with 9:46 to go in the game, tying the score at 24.
The Mountaineer offense struggled in the quarter and never made a real threat. SOU had a chance to take the lead with three minutes to go, but had their field goal blocked by the Mountaineer defense.
The first overtime saw the Raiders jumping out first, with a touchdown pass from Lee Lauduski to The Mountaineers had the next possession and lost quarterback O’Brien after being tackled. Freshman Brad Padayao would then come in and lead a short drive for an EOU equalizing touchdown.
The Mounties and Raiders seesawed back and forth for two more overtimes before Southern ended the game with a long touchdown pass from Lauduski to Greenidge on the final play of the 4th overtime..
EOU will travel to Dillon, Montana next for their first Frontier Conference contest against the University of Montana Western. Kick off is at 1:00 pm MT.
