La Grande Ore - The Eastern Oregon Football Team's progress in the classroom has been well documented over the course of Ian Shields one year as head coach of the Mounties. Coach Shields "Academic Gameplan" has seen the teams GPA rise to a 2.89. A huge improvement from previous years.
Seniors James Hatch and Cody Bloom along with junior Michael Eby were named
All-American Scholar-Athletes by the NAIA for their achievements in the classroom. For Hatch, this is the second such honor.
Student-athletes must be nominated by their head coach, have achieved junior academic status and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
Coach Shields is very proud of his teams success off the field and of these three players in particular, "This is a great honor for these young men and our program."
With a bumper crop of signees for the 2007 season, the Mountaineers will look to take another step in the right direction this fall. While the staff and players were trying to get to know each other this season, the team finished with its third consecutive winning season at 6-5. You can be sure they will be looking to improve in the classroom as well.
