LA GRANDE, Ore. - The Eastern Oregon softball team started the weekend with a couple of losses to the 20th ranked Owls of Oregon Tech but ended play with a two game sweep over Southern Oregon to keep their post season hopes alive.
After giving themselves a chance to knock off the CCC's number one team on Friday only to lose late in the game, the Mountaineers came out ready to play on Saturday and made it a day to remember.
First, EOU held an emotional ceremony honoring Hall of Fame Athletic Director Dr. Peggy Anderson. Then Eastern took to the field and cruised past the Raiders 7-2. Between games it was time to recognize the 7 seniors who put their hearts and souls into the EOU softball program.
Then in dramatic fashion, the Mounties held off a late charging SOU team when sophomore Iris Woodhead threw out Southern's Alicia Claudill at the plate to end the game in the top of the 7th inning.
EOU will look to keep the mojo going in on Tuesday when the Walla Walla University Wolves come to La Grande for the final home contest of the season. Game time is set for 3:30 pm at The Peg.
On Saturday the Mountaineers will travel to Caldwell to finish up the regular season with a double header against The College of Idaho. Game one of that series is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm MT.
Eastern will need to sweep the Yotes and get some help from some other teams to advance to post season play.
