Introducing Michael Thomas. Rocky Mountain's 6'2", 225-pound, freshman running back was a giant in Saturday's 21-9 victory over Eastern Oregon University.
Thomas finished the day with 127 yards on the ground on 15 carries. The bulk of those yards came in a decisive second half for RMC. The Bears outscored the Mountaineers 14-0 in the final two quarters.
EOU was led by freshman quarterback Brad Padayao who threw for 177 yards, completing 16 of his 29 passes, with one interception. James Mayfield led all receivers with 5 catches and 55 yards off those catches.
Thomas began the scoring with a 51-yard run with 4:07 to go in the first quarter to put Rocky Mountain up 7-0.
Rodell Razor put EOU on the scoreboard next as he leapt into the end-zone with an interception and return for 29 yards. The extra point was no good, which made the score 7-6 with 2:14 to go in the second quarter.
After a quick three-and-out, Eastern got the ball back and went 50 yards on seven plays in 1:16 and finished with a Thomas Akers 39-yard field-goal as the time ended in the first half. EOU led 9-7 going into halftime.
Brian Guisti turned a great 53-yard punt from Akers into a 95-yard touchdown return for RMC with 4:42 to play in the third quarter. Akers took a high-snap and made a phenomenal kick all the way to the RMC five-yard line, where Guisti caught it and made four tacklers miss on his way to the end-zone. The score put Rocky Mountain ahead for good, 14-9.
RMC quarterback, Drew Hedrick, tossed in a two-yard touchdown pass to Nick Harris for the final score with 4:51 to play in the fourth quarter, 21-9.
EOU hurt themselves being penalized ten times for 90 yards, including a holding penalty that took away a 56-yard touchdown pass.
Eastern finished with 264 yards of offense, and giving up only 245 yards. EOU also entered the red-zone only once, resulting in no points.
